Yes, but Tolkien does have a special place in misunderstanding. I've read very well versed arguments about it's meaning in the depths of the internet, from people who've definitely read it more than once. I've come to believe it's a bit of a Rorschach test.

It's weird isn't it. Especially as our PMs have been on the whole youngish for a long time. You see it every time the steel industry gets in a pickle, there are reasons to maintain furnaces, but needing to keep the ship yards running or bang out dozens of spitfires a week are not among them.

I guess supermarkets also probably feel they owe him one after he helped make it so much easier for them to import food.

Also quite funny our data was so fucked up in different directions it probably ended up being ok net net.

"But the actual number on the register was roughly right. There were about eight per cent of dead names or duplicate names and about eight per cent of omitted names as far as they could make out by comparing it with the census data" This kind of proves their point.

So was the census a driver of poll tax in any way, or were people just underreporting elsewhere and wary of anything contradictory?

I'm calling it for the city of london
October 28, 2025 at 5:30 PM
Ah.. interesting. Also the answer to my pub quiz question is hard. I thought I had it with St Asaph, but that was not a city in 1993
October 28, 2025 at 5:29 PM
No?
October 28, 2025 at 5:27 PM
TIL between 1991 and 1994 it was not a city. Now a proper pub quiz question is what was the UKs smallest city in 1993.

Yeah, it more than educational polish. Plenty of Etonian MPs can't orate for shit.

The sound those stumps would make when you cleaned bowled would be immensely satisfying.

Dysmorphic gym goers with an AI image of themselves that is impossible for them to achieve. People taking an AI image of themselves to a cosmetic surgeon and saying 'this'. Ultra flattering fake pictures becoming the norm on dating website profiles. Stormy seas.
October 27, 2025 at 5:41 PM
When it comes to health and appearance there is a whole can of worms with people using AI images as a reference point. Instagram idealism on crack.
October 27, 2025 at 5:07 PM
This currently seems to be ubiquitous with AI currently. The user benefits from a time saving, but others downstream have a harder time. E.g. Find someone who finds receiving AI generated - not quite right emails efficient, and I'll give you a freddo.

I've watched enough films to know giving the regency to the jealous great uncle is a terrible format.
October 27, 2025 at 4:06 PM
Oh yes. A lot of commonwealth countries affected will have treasures they want back. Maybe a firm, "give it back or Andrew gets bumped up and and carries our flag at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 games" would sharpen minds.

Banter move would be threatening to promote him to next up unless the UK gives them something nice.

This only works if the chair doesn't allow you to adjust the legatee height.
October 27, 2025 at 12:53 PM
The funniest thing is working in an office with huge chair quality disparity, and when someone with a good one retires or quits, people work for weeks to establish some sort of primogeniture over the chair. Every time.

I just went to their website to find their marquee animal to make that comment. And this was the explore homepage....

Twice daily talks and public feedings will do that to the ego. "Yeah it's us and the Orangutans holding this place together."
October 27, 2025 at 12:18 PM
Probably not the fault, but someone needs to take the fall.
