We have been able to hold municipal, provincial & federal elections across Canada and have the results counted and released that night — since 1867! — but handfuls of workers union certification ballots remain sealed in a box due to @AdsumForWomen.bsky.social’s lawyers.

It is absolutely *shocking* that @AdsumForWomen.bsky.social) has chosen, for the past eight months, to throw money at high-paid anti-union lawyers, and not just allow the ballot boxes for these workers to be open & recogize the union (@SEIUlocal2.bsky.social)

Sadly, none of the Atlantic provinces have accepted CUPW’s offer to distribute government cheques during the strike at Canada Post.

Instead, governments in the Atlantic provinces are choosing to force members of the public to travel for their badly needed cheques.

TEXT: “ATLANTIC PROVINCES REFUSING OFFER TO CONTINUE SOCIO-ECONOMIC CHEQUE DELIVERY DURING STRIKE Dear Sisters, Brothers, and Friends: November 21, 2024 On November 20, 2024, postal workers around the country delivered cheques to our communities as per the "Socio-Economic Cheque Memorandum of Agreement" with Canada Post. The agreement states: "CUPW members agree to volunteer to process and deliver government payments, federal, provincial and municipal to senior citizens, low income people and others who receive pension cheques and various forms of social assistance." Despite our offer to continue this service during the strike, there were no provincially issued cheques included in these deliveries from the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Prince Edward Island. Canada Post reached out and offered the SEC service to all provinces and territories. Only three accepted, and one province has since backed out. None of the Atlantic provinces have accepted this offer. Instead, governments are choosing to force members of the public to travel for their badly needed cheques and they are choosing to have other public sector workers do our struck work. In addition to the refusal to accept our offer to deliver cheques, provincial plans to continue business as usual through a drop-off and pick-up program of correspondence amount to asking other workers to scab, something we cannot allow governments to get away with. Although I have countless memories of Gary Burrill’s time as our MLA (and as the NSNDP leader for some years), I know that Krista Gallagher will be a tremendous NDP MLA for Halifax Chebucto, and will be outspoken for our community and social, economic, and climate justice issues much more broadly.

Our dear friend Gary Burrill will most certainly be missed as our MLA in Halifax Chebucto, and leaves big shoes to fill — both in the riding, and provincially during his years as Leader of the Nova Scotia NDP.

I am fully convinced that Krista is not only up for the challenge, but will excel as MLA.

Elections Nova Scotia folks & I resolved our outstanding differences in early 2014, following their initiating an RCMP investigation into my ballot-tweeting — with them agreeing to withdraw their $25,000 fine for a “compliance agreement”.

Took advantage of tonight’s later 8pm poll closing time to go vote in the provincial election here in Nova Scotia.

As per my longstanding “compliance agreement” with Elections Nova Scotia, I refrained yet again from photographing or tweeting my ballot.
