One of my sons showed me Wordle the other day. It didn’t look anything like I imagined. He reviewed the rules, demonstrated how it worked and suggested I try it. And, damn! I’m pretty good at it. I think I’ll cancel all of my brain-boosting apps now that I’ve found it. I’m only 5 years late, right?

Unless you’re doing a cool themed column like the brilliant @sapiotextual.bsky.social or using your space to deftly write about important local issues that often get overlooked (like @tonynorman.bsky.social used to pen for the PG), I tend to agree with this nowadays. Especially for newspapers.
The job of columnist shouldn't exist. No one has genuinely smart takes on tons of topics regularly. And the longer people get paid to do that, the bigger the ego grows and more the heart hardens to protect themselves from the constant attacks, which becomes just rejecting anything they don't like.

I recommend no fewer than 4 copies of any beloved book. A paperback for traveling and lending to friends, an eBook for reading with greasy snack fingers, an audio book so you know how the characters' names are actually pronounced, and a pristine hardcover to be buried with you like a pharaoh
