Watching Brideshead Revisited last night reminded me that it's been a long time since I wore one of my pocket watches, so for today I'm taking one of them out for some air (German, c. 1910).

It keeps time about as well as my modern automatic Seiko wristwatch, amazing quality.

The dawn this morning is pretty spectacular out here.

I picked up another vintage Rimowa suitcase in an online auction again, this time I wanted a 1970s version of the small (roughly briefcase-sized) model. Perfect for overnight trips. Well-preserved interior, both original keys included.

After a tough, stressful week it's pure bliss to sit down in the sofa with a brandy and soda and my newly purchased DVD box with Brideshead Revisited. Getting rid of those cursed streaming services was the best decision I've made in a long time.

Jag föreställer mig att varje morgon är ungefär såhär?

As I was preparing a lecture on the Zimmermann telegram, I had the bright idea that I'd make a link chart to help illustrate how all these players and events are connected. Quite a few hours later I'm thinking that I underestimated how long this would take...

Actually, maybe I just need a sign with this printed on it.

Dropped a Mk 50 where I estimated the contact to be and it homed right in on him. Gotcha!
October 26, 2025 at 10:26 PM
All right, I'm certain that they're picking up an Akula now. Time to triangulate the contact.

Going to investigate more closely. I'm going to increase sensor density by dropping some more buoys and I got my MAD detector running.
October 26, 2025 at 10:26 PM
After about 20 minutes, I'm getting some interesting data. Sometimes it gets incorrectly classified when the signal is weak.

My old favorite: P-3 sub hunting. Dropping some buoys to establish a sensor chain in the patrol area.

There's a sale on Steam, you can get Sub Command, Dangerous Waters, 688(i) and Fleet Command as a package deal for like $5. I just wanted to check if everything worked and couldn't stop playing once I got started with Sub Command. It took more than an hour before I could get myself to shut it down.

An hour of this does wonders to wash away the stress accumulated during the week. I was reminded of Springsteen's Nebraska album as they were discussing it on the radio (because of the movie), so I was listening to that in my headphones. It blended very well with these surroundings.

Tonight's movie was Prom Night (1980). I enjoyed it more than I'd expected, but then again I'm an 80s kid so I grew up on a diet of slashers from an early age. This one has a lot of 70s charm to it, which makes it a bit more interesting than a lot of the later formulaic 80s stuff.

Intelligence academic vs. intelligence practitioner in a Friday night game of Battle of Hoth. 3-0 in games to me right now, and this is the first time I play this game.

My latest purchases arrived today, bought both used in online auctions for a good price (from the same seller, so I could save some money on the shipping).

While I'm working, these two are having a mid-day snooze

Done with the editing of another video lecture, this time on European signals intelligence cooperation. I wish I had more time to work on this one, but this will have to do for now. After I've published it for the upcoming course, I'm thinking of maybe making it public on YouTube, we'll see.

Since I was looking for an excuse to procrastinate, I went down and took a picture of the nailing wall for you (these are some of the more recent ones, my own has been taken down since it was too long ago, there's finite space on the wall). Note the thick iron nails.
October 15, 2025 at 4:02 PM
There were leftovers in the break room at work from the nailing ceremony earlier today (where a PhD student nails her printed dissertation to the wall and the supervisor officially announces the date of the upcoming defense), so now I can drink non-alcoholic sparkling wine with my falafel.

Do you get annoyed when your gloves get soaked through by rain when you're outside with your dog? This fall, get yourself a pair of Cold War vintage military surplus CBRN protection gloves. Certified to withstand corrosive chemical weapons for at least 30 minutes, will handle water with ease.

Imagine if they even put in... Pvpjtgb 9031! Or napalm strikes with A 32 Lansen! My cup runneth over...

Another Major Victory, this time a larger engagement in 1968 using nothing but infantry and support weapons. I had a company of GDR reserve motorized infantry + elements from a Grenztruppen company, going up against a British army rearguard detachment to take a small village.

FINALLY a major victory. This time I had a plt of Leopard 1A4 + a plt of Leo 2 (they're absolutely brutal in this game), with a plt of Jägers in Luchs and a bunch of MILAN ATGMs. Everyone was brilliant, those MILAN missiles are worth their weight in gold when enemy armor shows up in the wrong place.
