Newspaper article, which reads: Another "man-woman." He calls on his employer and asks for himself. In a case heard at Peterborough, in which Johnson Hood, a plate-worker, was charged with wandering abroad as a lunatic at Peterborough, it was stated that he had masqueraded at intervals from his youth as a woman. His wife, who lives in Birmingham, said he had declared that the police would never catch him. Inspector Kyle, in his evidence, said Hood was met coming out of the Peterborough Labour Exchange in a lady's costume—green hat, trimmed with blue ribbon, veil to match, dark brown wig, white blouse, blue skirt, and patent leather shoes. When challenged with being a man masquerading in woman's clothes Hood said, "Yes, I know. I am the son of King Edward VII. and King George is my brother." He was taken to the police station. The Chief Constable stated that Hood registered at the Labour exchange as a cook. He also went to the works at which he was employed, dressed in woman's clothes, and asked for himself. He was given a seat in the office while inquiries were made for Hood. On being told that Hood "was not at work to-day," he bowed himself out, saying how sorry he was to have given all that trouble. Hood's wife and son signed a document to the effect that they would look after him and take him to Birmingham, and the man himself promising not to masquerade again in woman's clothes, he was discharged.

Spiral staircase with Tilly Losch's footprints embroidered into the carpet. Text from wikipedia: A permanent reminder of Tilly Losch could be seen at Edward James' former home Monkton House on his West Dean estate. Her "wet" footprints were woven into the carpet on the spiral staircase. As Tilly emerged from the bath, leaving behind a trail of wet footprints as she ascended the spiral stairs, Edward subsequently commissioned the carpet with the motif woven into it as a token of his love for her. After their divorce Edward moved the carpet to West Dean House (now West Dean College, where it can still be seen) replacing it at Monkton with a similar carpet made with his dog's footprint. James divorced Losch in 1934, accusing her of adultery with Prince Serge Obolensky, an American hotel executive; her countersuit, in which she made it clear that James was homosexual, failed. James was in fact bisexual. After the divorce, James joined a social set in England which included the Mitford sisters and the composer Lord Berners.

Very interesting. Thank you. I was intrigued by this reference I found a little while ago. Holdich was a 90-year-old man recalling various stories from his time in the city. "And they were roommates..." comes to mind.

Newspaper text reading: the large house on the east side of the Market-place, which was subsequently used as the Stamford, Spalding and Boston Branch, and still more recently as offices for Messrs. Edmunds, etc. This lady kept a female servant who constantly wore men's clothes, probably, it was thought, to support the fiction that a man resided in the house and so act as a protection to the inmates.
