Worse on the return when I had to deliver the bike to Eurostar's checked luggage office at the very north of Gare du Nord after the interminable trek from the Metro station. Once the bike had been dropped off I had plenty of time to visit other international cities before my train back to the UK..

That is an issue for sure. I purposely allowed extra time in Paris in case that happened. As the time wasn't needed, I had lunch in the bar of Le Train Bleu at Gare de Lyon. They even allowed my bagged-up bike in there!
