I’ve been thinking that too. Not to mention, research on feasible solutions takes time, which we will have less and less of. I’m worried the solutions we come up with will fail to often, wasting precious time and resources and eroding trust in science. Slippery slope 🫤

And of course, many thanks also to our panelists for making the trip to ZALF 🙏 For some it was a walk down the street 🚶‍♀️ for others it was a 2-hour journey 🚗

Months of meetings, phone calls, and emails went into preparing this event. Huge thanks to my fellow postdoc rep, Dr. Marlene Palka, our Ph.D. rep colleagues Clara Rohde, Tara Meghana Kaila and Daniel Edem Halolo, and our early-career research coordinators Dr. Sandra Kerbler and Lena Domke.

I'm glad so many of our peers followed our invitation and attended the panel discussion, participated in the breakout sessions with our panelists, and connected over tea and coffee. It was so rewarding to hear all the positive feedback we got.

Our goal was to shed light on #non-academic #careers to our #Ph.D. #students and #postdocs, which is so important. Many of us only see academia as the path forward, without understanding the slim chances of becoming a professor and w/o gaining the skills necessary to succeeding elsewhere.

Our panel experts worked in the private sector (saschareth.bsky.social), in academic publishing (atinsharma.bsky.social), in public service (Lena-Katharina Schmidt-Rudolph), and in the non-profit sector (Martin Müller-Butz).

1 - Become best friends with the technology transfer officer of your university (or the Leibniz Association, etc.)

2) Don't publish anything that you want to get a #patent for (neither on social media, in academic journals, or in a Donald Duck comic in the 1950s).
