“A low risk [of really extreme warming] is not no risk. That risk exists. If that risk is so severe it’s going to be catastrophic or existential, policy makers need to be prepared.”

One of the quotes from me in this excellent piece from @rtakver.bsky.social discussing the impact of #COP29.
Come by my poster this morning at #EGU2025

I want your perspectives on catastrophic climate risk and the impact of unprecedented extreme events.

The latest developments by Google #Quantum are exciting and we in the #climate #science & modelling community should pay close attention given the potential for solving eg. Navier-Stokes equations at exponentially faster speeds compared to classical computing!

🌡️ With 2024 on track to be the hottest on record, scientists from IIASA and @columbiaup.bsky.social provide the first worldwide map of high-risk regions in a new @pnas.org study.
“These regions become temporary hothouses,” says lead author Kai Kornhuber.

I'm quite confused by this, but I think I've decided this is a brilliant piece of art!

Despite being a climate summit, COP is often held in countries that are putting their foot on the accelerator of environmental collapse.

Last year's COP was held in Dubai, and climate scientist @tomwoodscience.bsky.social was shocked by the gap between rhetoric and reality.

It seems #COP29 will end as yet another depressing failure, with developed countries unwilling to commit to what is needed to mitigate the most severe impacts on the world's most vulnerable communities.

$250bn by 2035 is simply not enough, and the text is, as usual, riddled with get-out clauses.
NEW TEXTS DROPPED AT #COP29

* NCQG: Draft finance target of $250bn
* UAE dialogue: clear ref to GST para 28
* UAE dialogue: Options on taking GST fwd
* MWP: GST remains absent

This is a really interesting analysis of the problems with Twitter (X) since Musk took over, and the reason I (along with many others) are migrating permanently away from that platform.
Enjoy the premiere with me tomorrow morning while a script slowly deletes every single thing I've posted on X in the last 15 years.

Hi everyone on Bluesky!
I'm a climate scientist at @kcl.ac.uk interested in extreme and worst-case scenario high impact, low likelihood climate change.
I aim to improve our understanding of the plausibility and possibility of potentially catastrophic unprecedented extreme weather and climate events.
