If you have this model it might be worth dual booting using refind. The Mac side of things can use the audio jack as input! Useful for digitizing audio recordings!

Linux mint works well on mine! Might want to replace the battery, up the ram and install an ssd.

Something like that exists already right? Imagine some trying to use the mid 2012 MacBook. Support is dropped mostly and what else can you do 🤣. Maybe teach them to burn or rip a CD.

I have found homes for several machines in the past but at some point the machines are no longer “usable”. So I keep them around or give them to someone with similar hobbies as me. Usually someone that appreciates the machines for what they are and know Linux.

Pheeew no idea yet. I have a stack of machines doing nothing at the moment but they are too good to go. This machine still has a DVD drive and firewire so that might be useful for some future retro projects. My other old Macbook can use its audio jack for input which was useful for audio archiving.

I did this the first time before I figured out how to remove them with hot air. Next time I’m ordering those solder points that have the correct spacing for the pins. Those seem neat!

I got it to work by unchecking the “Only in tablet mode” option in the display configuration. It seems tablet mode isn’t triggered by flipping the screen over.

Nicely done!
