Just as cigars gave way to cigarettes as the country urbanized and people lived in more crowded environments where gross, stinky smoke was unwelcome.

“Accelerated” is the operative word here. It’s happening faster than before & faster even than many concerned scientists had predicted. We are in deep trouble. If there are indeed things we can do to prevent an environmental catastrophe, America’s political collapse means we probably won’t do them.
