Comment from the audience - model disclosure of AI including saying none used. If you are hesitant to disclose use, that bit of friction should prompt a reflection on why. Good conversation opportunities with that as well.
November 13, 2025 at 7:42 PM
@karencosta.bsky.social moving discussion away from highly prescriptive discussions (not performing as well) to these more open discussions:

What did you know about X before this week?
What did you want to know about X?
What did you learn about X?
What reading (our text) stood out to you and why?
November 13, 2025 at 7:37 PM
@karencosta.bsky.social third tip is related to Friction. The struggle that helps us learn. AI is the anti to this. Karen trusts her students but does not expect purity.

Karen is contemplating requiring Google Doc history next semester to add just enough friction.

@karencosta.bsky.social asks us to check on our own awesomely named consume:create:chill ratio to make sure those things stay in balance.

Karen also does a daily morning pages routine where she free writes three pages each morning (with the first two being grumbles) along with touching grass.
November 13, 2025 at 7:32 PM
@karencosta.bsky.social also reminds us to be intentional of noticing the good student work too. The ones genuinely engaging in the course. Not just the ones that frustrate.
November 13, 2025 at 7:29 PM
@karencosta.bsky.social approach to handling AI:
1. organize your AI strategy - keep key resources in one place for easy access (Karen uses a Notion page) in order to respond to AI issues with students. This includes outreach language, and language to respond to student submissions.

@karencosta.bsky.social speaking on a webinar today and I am paraphrasing her so I hope I got it right - What if the critical skill of this era is resisting AI?

We are reading The Norton Guide to Equity-Minded Teaching as a staff this semester and I particularly enjoy the succinctness of this quote in relation to promoting academic integrity.

"Policing honesty just doesn't work"

Also this book is very good so far. I definitely recommend the 1st 47 pages

Should I ask a bunch of pre-service teachers this question during my AI presentation?

“If you can search, or have an intelligent agent find, anything, why learn anything? What is truly worth learning?”

(p.3) Holmes, W., Bialik, M., & Fadel, C. (2019).

Not a fan of the "doing more with less" phrase. It is not true. You end doing less with less or your taking from something else.
