the best case I can make for this is that taking social media away a few years ago would have prevented a large and very noisy cohort of people from being radicalised into bigotry & cruelty. I'm talking about the 40 to 60 year olds, obviously. particularly those in the press or electoral politics

they straightforwardly think that racist violence, apartheid, bigotry and rich people nonceing children are all fine to good. at worst they are simply the cost of doing business
