I encourage you to research this through various, reliable news & information websites. This is why the US - and only the US - did away with its effective & efficient streetcar systems when other nations did not.

The conspiracy was organized by GM, Standard Oil and a tire manufacturer (Goodyear or BF Goodrich if I recall). It was to deprive people of public transportation options, and force them into cars.
