I know people traditionally share these on Friday, but I always forget, lol. Monday morning seems more natural to me. The previous week had ended, a new week is about to get started. Anyway, here’s what I listened to last week - spoiler alert: it was a LOT of Frodus.

Just realized that I’m spinning the same album that I’m wearing today 😂

Here's what the last month in listening looked like. A ton of stuff on here. Seeing Doomriders in the top spot makes me happy!

This week in music - a little light, so we went with a 4x4. Loving the new Mizmor / Hell single and the new Palehorse / Palerider EP.

Forgot to post this yesterday. It was a metal heavy week with a lot of nautical themed funeral doom thanks to discovering the band Ahab

Friday 5x5 - this week featured a LOT of Amenra thanks to a post from @posttim.bsky.social that made me realize it had been way too long since I spent any real time with their music.

Weekly 5x5 - some new, some old, a lot of noisy rock.

For most of my life I’ve done a lot of reading. It’s typically something I do every day. In stressful times I tend to read more, probably because it provides a bit of an escape (even if I tend to reach for a lot of material that feels relevant to our current situation).

It’s not just the end of the week, it’s also the end of the month. Here’s what filled my ears (and my heart) over the last 31 days.

Another week of listening - this one had some jazz, some hiphop beats, a heavy dose of post hardcore and a lot of “skramz” as the kids call it.

This week in listening was a lot of post-* with a big noisy finish here at the end of the week. It’s nice to have a good soundtrack while you scream into the void. #fivebyfive #fivebyfriday

Forgot to post this on Friday - it was a tough week so I didn’t do a lot of listening. Bartees Strange, Belle & Sebastian, and Danger Mouse featured heavily.

Another week in listening - this one included a pretty good spread of genres and eras. Highlights this week were Lungfish, Lungfish adjacent stuff like Zomes and The Pupils, Damien Jurado & Pedro The Lion. It was also fun to jump back into some Badly Drawn Boy after over a decade without listening.

Listening to “Control” by @pedrothelion.bsky.social this morning and it still holds up. What a fantastic record.

I think I’m going to start posting 5x5s of what I’ve been listening to every Friday. Here’s the past week in music for me:

(1/28) One final idea from the introductory section of “How Propaganda Works” that I think really drives home the current shape of the problem of propaganda and how we are all potentially susceptible to it.

Following up on the question “Are alleged liberal democracies now exploiting confusion between democratic values and managerial values to advance antidemocratic policies?” from “How Propaganda Works”:

Thoughts on Plato, Democracy & Managerial Societies from Jason Stanley’s book “How Propaganda Works”.

Let’s start of with a quick refresher - Plato argues AGAINST democracy in The Republic.

More thoughts from“How Propaganda Works”.

The idea that inequality poses a threat to democracy is not new in political philosophy. Stanley points us to Madison’s thoughts in Federalist No. 10 where it becomes clear that Madison views material inequality as a central source of flawed ideology.

I started reading “How Propaganda Works” by Jason Stanley this past weekend. Though it was originally published in 2015 (before Trump’s first term) it feels more relevant than ever. I’ll be sharing quotes and thoughts over the next week or so, but here’s a quick preview of the general idea:
