I wrote "progress", and though that word is fine, a more effective word is "prosperity."

The very concept of prosperity is an offense to past generations.

My son draws (well, to me), so we've had the "what is art?" debate. I've mentioned my admiration for Pollock's work, and he bashes it! (I pray it's because he's 17.) He strongly feels abstract art is art that's told its value to viewers.

My favorite part of the '78 film is seeing young Clark at his father's graveside, lamenting "All my powers....and I couldn't save him." When you make HIM question what the next step is to take, then you've made it compelling.
