Fair points. I was really thinking about the admin type roles (as I was in IT in UCL), which are easily transferred outside universities, and in London there really are positions outside universities. Research and teaching staff are a different kettle of fish, and I agree it's harder.

Yup, that may be true. Compare the local job market though, and the likelihood of retraining into alternative employment. Consider also the importance of that local industry to the towns and villages.

I hope no-one at UCL is made redundant, but odds are they'll find work again.
