Connelly Early needs to work on only one thing this coming offseason and next year: durability.

Here are his pitch numbers compared to some teammates. And toward the end, he didn't seem quite ready for even this much load. (Though Bello seemed to wear down, too.)

Here's part of the reason for Refsnyder, Eaton, and Sogard over Yoshida, Abreu, and Lowe against one of the toughest left-handed pitchers in the game tonight.
Also note that Rafaela's numbers have been a lot better over the last 11 days.
I like their chances with this lineup.

Several bats are coming to life at just the right time for the Red Sox.
If Ceddanne Rafaela, Masataka Yoshida, and Nathaniel Lowe can continue hitting into the postseason like they've been hitting on this road trip, the Red Sox will have a deep and dangerous lineup.

Red Sox fans, let's appreciate what Nate Eaton has done for the Sox this month. With both Anthony and Abreu out, he injected a ton of energy into a tired team, created chaos on the basepaths with his Duran/Hamilton speed, and led the team in AVG, OBP, OPS, wRC+.

Thank you, Nate!

Perhaps I spoke too soon.

Updating a table I posted a week ago. This is basically 2nd half stats, starting with the day they switched to 1-on-1 hitting coaching. In approximate best-to-worst order (best on top).
Bold stats mean the number is an increase from a week ago (this was not applied to PA though).

Best to worst Red Sox hitters since first homestand after Devers trade.
Anthony impressive vs. LHP and RHP.
Romy isn't just for lefties anymore, and Wilyer isn't just for righties anymore.
But Duran struggles vs LHP while torching RHP.
Bregman solid since injury.
Story, best season in years.

The Red Sox have a deep team with no clear standouts.

With no players in the top 45 of fWAR through Sept 2, they are in a 5-way tie for last for that number. But they are the clear leaders of number of players in the top 77 of fWAR, with the 7 players listed below. No other team has above 5.

To boost your point: on June 27, the Red Sox changed their approach to coaching hitting and the accessibility of their tools. With that as a dividing date, Romy's OPS's look as follows (with league averages for all batters and for right-handed hitters included for reference):

It was pointed out that in this chart I made showing that Ceddanne Rafaela's bat has been much better when playing CF than when playing 2B, the sample sizes were quite small. Here's a refresh now that the samples are a bit bigger. No apparent change in the results. (I did reorder the columns.)

There are 8 AL rookies with more than 1.0 WAR according to FanGraphs, as of today. All of them play for either the Athletics, the Red Sox, or the White Sox.

Coming to the #RedSox has woken up Nathaniel Lowe's bat. He's produced significantly more runs, hits, total bases, and RBIs in his first 20 PA on the Red Sox than in his last 49 PA on the Nationals, and than in Abraham Toro's last 38 PA on the Sox.
August 25, 2025 at 2:22 PM
If you focus on just the part of the season since he started playing second base, you see that there's still a huge difference between Rafaela batting as a 2B versus batting as a CF - he's stayed the same batter he was before when in CF, but dropped off dramatically when at 2B.
August 20, 2025 at 8:51 PM
Ceddanne Rafaela hasn't really changed as a hitter since he started playing second base on July 12, on days when he plays center field: it's just that he's been beyond atrocious on days when he plays 2B.

The Red Sox should move him back to CF for the rest of 2025.

"Calls mount", huh?
Maybe people should have a look at what they'll be getting, first.

My preference would be for the Red Sox to just make Romy Gonzalez the everyday first baseman.

Memorial Day activated Ceddanne Rafaela's bat.
The All-Star Break killed it.

I believe the Red Sox would have won last night's game had they started Romy Gonzalez over Abraham Toro.

They should know enough now to always be starting Romy over Toro. Here are the updated charts I've been using these past few weeks to justify this.

Alex Cora, please listen!!!
August 10, 2025 at 3:12 PM
Nooooo!!! Red Sox, Alex Cora, I showed you why you need to start Romy Gonzalez and sit Abraham Toro!!! Every day!

Romy's gonna go cold - I showed you he does better with regular playing time.

This is like benching a first-ballot All Star to play a replacement-level player. Why?!!?
August 10, 2025 at 1:17 AM
Red Sox, Alex Cora, WHY is Toro starting and Romy Gonzalez sitting? Huh?

I thought we'd talked about this! Gonzalez should start every day! Toro should get no more starts! Do I have to remind you of their platoon splits?

Here they are, since June 12 and also since June 27.
August 9, 2025 at 3:32 AM
The Red Sox are the deepest team in the majors.

They have 7 position players in the top 50 in WAR per 600 PA (minimum 150 PA). The Cubs have 5, and no other team has more than 3.

They have 9 in the top 90 in WAR per 600 PA (minimum 150 PA). The Cubs have 7, and no other team has more than 5.
August 7, 2025 at 10:13 PM
Romy Gonzalez: He's not just for lefties anymore.

People keep using "innings pitched" as a measure of Garrett Crochet's workload, but IP is more of an accomplishment. The best measure of workload is pitches thrown. And as you can see, although Crochet is tied for first in IP, he's tied for 10th in pitches thrown. Not as bad as it may have sounded.

Even the platoon splits argument doesn't help Toro out. He really shouldn't be the everyday first baseman for the Red Sox. Romy González should.

Their defense is about the same.

At the plate, it's not even close, even against right-handed pitchers.
