Whilst I'm no longer directly writing papers anymore it's always great to help contribute to some great work.

Not exactly a casual read but my be of interested to some in the solar world. Also some pretty EBSD images.

This always comes to mind when the senior leadership of UK universities talk about cuts. Never a cut up top.

Embarking on an unusual bit of materials science today. We're Focused Ion Beam milling paint flakes from a 16/17th century Venetian painting to see what pigments they used.

Always fun to do cross discipline work and use the fancy machines on things we never thought to do before. 🧪

A massive shame Sunak is watering down our climate policies again. He'd rather we trail behind everyone than lead the world in a green transition.

I wish I could be angry but it is so on form it is just sad.

If we are "on track" with the current low effort imagen what we could do if we tried.

Technicians Symposium at Swansea Uni today. Looking at how the uni can better support and recognise the people who help make the research happen.

Have you thought about your technical staff and how much of a difference/impact to your facility they make recently?

These are crystals of Iron-Silicon made by a pack cementation process. I was trying to make Beta FeSi as a cheap thermoelectric but instead of a nice coherent layer I got these weird hopper-like crystals caused by a direct gas to solid transition.

The SEM image was taken during my EngD in 2015. 🔬 🐡
