It was a pretty full weekend in and around the con for us too. We popped in on Ultraman Live at the American Dream Mall nearby on Saturday, and I had a fruitful haul at the Maplewood Record Fair this morning. It's quickly become my favorite record show, and the word must be out because it was PACKED

@patzprime.bsky.social was lucky enough to go home with one of the pieces he drew!

Anime NJ++ is off to an auspicious start for me. This was Keita Amemiya's autograph: an entirely freehand ink pen drawing of Zeiram! It was incredibly impressive watching him just whip this up inside of two minutes.

Cap off AnimeNJ++ this Sunday at 3PM with Giant Robots at Work, a panel about workplace mecha anime!

Look, sometimes even a mecha pilot gets called in on a weekend. Join us to see what this microgenre has to offer!

Frankly it's really annoying how many movies don't meet what I'd think are pretty simple criteria and are also actually good

UFO movies shouldn't be big and loud and dumb, they should be lonely and weird

Anyway here's a Bela

Okay my bad, it's the original Dhoom theme, which I'm actually not sure I've ever watched. Still, you love to see it

Apparently it wasn't that Rough Magik was too bleak, but too 'limited'?

Most of the rest of the episode is a drug-induced flashback to a potential Shadow Out of Time type incident during the Falklands War. I'm genuinely curious what a full series of this would have been like, what a typical episode's formula would be. Even the pilot is explicitly called Episode Zero.

Of the Lovecraftian fare I watched over the weekend, I'd most recommend Rough Magik: aa BBC pilot that never made it to series. I'd guess that's due to its unrelenting, bleak tone – the fact that the show cold opens with a mother sacrificing her two children to a Cthulhu idol probably didn't help.

A little early for a last 4 watched on Letterboxd, but over the weekend I checked out some Lovecraftian movies out of the 2006 book The Lurker in the Lobby. All of them were sub-1000 watched on Letterboxd, and two of them had less than 100.

Getting in during the Halloween post-game basically. I like my day-of Halloween watching to be more explicitly tied to the holiday or season, and more spooky than scary.

Perfect way to cap off Halloween by clearing Splatterhouse! I was pretty rusty this time and had to continue with a level select; the first time I cleared this on console it was in one go, but I was coming right off of playing Splatterhouse 2 a lot at the time.

Oh dear god, now THIS is scary

I knew Robert Bloch contributed a bunch to the Karloff-hosted series Thriller, but apparently he adapted one of his own stories that was the first appearance of the Cthulhu Mythos on television!? I've got to watch this later.

Also, "The Weird Tailor"? A tremendous pun on Weird Tales, incredible

It's very funny to me that one of the last things HP Lovecraft ever did in public life was dox Robert Bloch

Glad you enjoyed it! I know I was impressed with it.

This is one where glimpsing the cover in the video store horror aisle stuck with me for most of my life. I finally watched it last year and it absolutely kicks ass, just a really fun cyberpunk horror b-movie.

For context, this banner is from the first episode of the short-lived ghost hunting show Ghosts in the Hood. It has lived rent-free in my mind ever since I first saw it

I had this custom printed as a Halloween decoration for me and me alone
