Brookings just published my analysis of Taiwan politics after the first wave of recalls. The main point: the recalls have resolved some remaining political uncertainty, & all 3 political parties have some incentives to tack towards the middle.

A interesting war of words has recently erupted between Taiwanese historian Lee Hsiao-feng and James Soong in the Libery Times op-ed pages. Lee started it by going after Soong for saying that Taiwan was a deserted/wild/desolate island and that the Qing were Chinese.

I guess as a celebrity, you either die having been at least neutral or live long enough to become the person who goes out of their way to be dismissive of Taiwan. No matter how often it happens, it's always sad to see.
There’s something so dystopian about a movie star coming to Taipei (as neutral a city name as any), then proceeding to post about visiting “Taipei China” on a social media app that is blocked in China.
