When the person who changed his/her family name becomes a parent, he/she will not allow married couples to have separate family names, but will try to leave his/her new family name to his/her children at all costs. This conservative system will turn its energy inward and exhaust someone else again.

By prioritizing uniformity over embracing diversity, Japan as a nation might be creating room to focus on other matters. However, this broader perspective solves nothing on its own.

Some love and are proud of their surname, others have to change it to prove their marriage in Japan. Why am I not allowed to change my last name? I will never interfere with the decisions of past couples.

I am in favor of separate surnames for married couples. I just want to marry her before it becomes available as an institution. I would like to know how past Japanese married couples discussed and settled the issue.

I met a girl a year ago, proposed to her and she accepted. Now I feel some difficulties to proceed with the marriage process, especially to decide whether I change my last name to her last name or she changes it.
