My method was to look at direct line ancestry rather than to sift through entire families. Combining what I know of American history and piecing together movements within the US, it's been a thought experiment I didn't see coming.

I had two goals: find the immigrants and find the military personnel/non-combat participants in my family line. I identified 124 individuals, of whom 12 were vets/service members, and 16 immigrants from five countries.

The research is just as solid as any I've done for any other subject. I've dug through (digital) archives, town histories, and military pay/veterans' benefit documents. I've also evaluated software for managing it all. I've been concerned it could be viewed as self-indulgent.
