Assuming SecDef's liquor shelves are well-organized is a fact not in evidence!

It just reinforces that the picture was probably taken very quickly to prove the point, and it's a shame that there wasn't a little more time spent on it. Just the fact we're all talking about this rather than the larger substantive issues blunts the force of the picture.

Yes, exactly. I'm guessing the ribbon portion is correct with the NAM overlapping (medal sets are almost always professionally mounted, and it would be strange for that to be screwed up), but if you're just pulling them out of a drawer it's not unusual for the actual medals to get jumbled.

Each line of medals is a row. You can only have a certain number of medals in a row before you have to start a new one, and medals are arranged based on precedence, with the higher ones being on top and inboard.

His second (middle) row should be his bottom row, and the row on the bottom should be the middle row.

Unfortunately, Hegseth wasn't wrong. Kelly's got his second and third rows reversed. The second row should actually be the bottom row. (But this whole thing is still insane... just with Kelly had better attention to detail and not give Hegseth an opening).

You are exactly correct.

Best I can tell the order on each bar is right, but he swapped the 2nd and 3rd rows. So there's a grain of truth in SecDef's post, but that this is what he thinks is important (and the threat of SecDef doing a uniform inspection on a sitting U.S. Senator / retired CAPT) is insane.

One of the great things about having a couple of early commands as a SWO is that I got the bloviating command philosophy out of my system early and saw what a waste it was. By the time I hit CDR Command, I had that crap tight.

Any "command philosophy" longer than 1pg in 18pt type is a waste of paper.

I think the 1662 BCP gets this just right, at least for Sailors.

(To be fair, the result will be the same as under Mattis, but I suspect he at least understood Naval force generation principles. He just didn't care that he was breaking them.)
