In 1900, Lancashire Rugby League team beat Westmorland 15-0. Incredible to see players from long extinct village teams (Staveley, Ambleside & Holme) and that there was a T Fawcett from Holme. Mick Fawcett is a legendary cricketer for Holme Cricket Club playing on until at least the late 1990s.

In 1938 a frog created a world record by jumping 15 ft at the International Frog Jumping held at Angels Camp, California. That was beaten in 1986 by a frog named Rosie the Ribeter, achieving a leap of 21 ft 5¾ in. Next year's comp will be held on May 14-17, 2026 so start training your frog!

Cate Le Bon supported by H Hawkline was brilliant in Manchester last night. Equally good was Jane Weaver tonight at a pop up gig in the Shire Hall at Lancaster Castle. Amazing new venue

Born on 1st October 1837 was Edward Saunderson, Irish Unionist Alliance MP for North Armagh. The son of a Tory MP, he was an an Anglo-Irish landowner and led the Irish Unionist Alliance between 1891 and 1906. A devout evangelical Anglican, he was also a keen yachtsman.

born on this day in 1854 was John Rutherford, the future Conservative MP for Darwen. Educated at Lancaster RGS, he played football for Blackburn Rovers, inherited a brewery and owned a horse called Solario which won the St Leger & the Ascot Gold Cup

OTD in 1952 former Tory MP George Goschen died. The son of a Liberal Chancellor of the Exchequer, he served in the Boer War as ADC to Lord Roberts whilst an MP & 1st Lord of the Admiralty. He was a Major in WW1 & in 1924 was appointed Governor of Madras. He was briefly acting Viceroy in 1929Picture

160 years ago today JP Farrell, Irish Nationalist MP, was born. He was a fervent supporter of land reform, imprisoned several times and during his last imprisonment in Kilmainham Gaol contracted an illness, which may have led to his death, aged 56, in 1921

OTD in 1862 was born Liberal MP Edward Grey. 3 of his brothers died young- George was mauled by a lion in 1911, and Charles was felled by a buffalo in 1928. His other brother, Alexander, was a vicar in Trinidad and died there aged 48 from the after-effects of a childhood cricket injury

Born in the IoM, Wilson was a major figure in the development and reform of Victorian public schools and promoted the teaching of science, accepted the theory of evolution and its implications for the literal interpretation of the Bible
