Like many scientists who aren't confused, angry, and thin-skinned, I tried mightily to engage with Vinay Prasad on social media and explain some simple concepts; like many, all I did was get blocked.
It is maddening and sad that someone so far out of his lane (whatever that might be) can deprive Americans of the freedom to make INDIVIDUALIZED risk-benefit decisions.
Patronizing "doctor knows best" dictates are bad enough when the patient's preferences may be unreasonable-- but are her/his rights. But in this case, there is not just a thumb on the scale, but an elephant-sized ego ruining his ability to think clearly.
[in my case, I am a doctor of public health, an expert in industrial hygiene, and was the lead author of the federal (OSHA) regulation on the selection and use of respirators and masks. I tried to explain to Vinay how USELESS controlled trials of these devices are in the field, esp. if the researchers are foolish enough to count hospitalizations as the outcome variable.
We KNOW that N95 respirators are extremely effective at reducing the concentration of aerosols the size and shape of Covid aerosols that reach the wearer's breathing zone. Vinay pretends he "knows" something different.
