As a film critic, I honestly don’t think you should give a shit about what film critics think (Like what you like! It’s OK! You don't need anyone else's permission or approval!).

But if anyone was curious, here’s my favourite ten* films of 2024 in no particular order:

The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears (Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani, 2013)

Two filmmakers I'm so proud to call friends, H+B are wholly original and driven by such extraordinary talent and passion.

I also co-edited this book about them with dear @tjinimin.bsky.social qldff.com/store/The-St...

I was thrilled to be on the film jury for SXSW Sydney, and could not be prouder that the Best Feature Film award went to A Grand Mockery, a bold experimental genre film (think Bogan Bela Tarr) shot on 16mm from Brisbane that is exactly what Australia needs more of www.sxswsydney.com/news/screen-...

So 50% of the programmers at NZIFF have now resigned - in some cases with decades of tenure - with zero public acknowledgement on the festival's part. Worrisome.

Underlining "everybody should be a film lover in addition to their skillset"
Festivals are underfunded. If passion isn't a reason for being underpaid, you're just hiring an incompetent who doesn't care about film.
Programmers will end up doing most marketing/development/logistics anyway.
Happy to report that we're building a model similar to what @ericallenhatch.bsky.social advocates for here. Film Fest Knox will be a regional fest, in several senses of the word, so we have some necessary guardrails around the program, but the model is solid. www.patreon.com/posts/88147607

There is something so aesthetically intrusive about logo reels on experimental shorts. Do funding bodies similarly expect such bugs to be applied to more physical artworks?
