Bringing this to class, to show my students an example of a strong introductory paragraph.
Stella Barey has an hour for lunch. At 1.30pm, she loads her banged-up Tacoma with her three Belgian malinois and drives to a secret Los Angeles hiking trail. There, she gulps down a tapioca pudding and laces up her sneakers. After checking over her shoulder for foot traffic, she pulls down her brown sweatpants and jiggles her bare ass for the camera. Then come the undies. Her coiffed landing strip hovers above the rocks as a rush of urine floods the trail. Every mile she walks, she films another video: a flash, a moon, a finger up the ass.

At one point in the article, Weiss admiringly notes that Australians are much better at taking vacations—but neglects to mention that the United States is the only industrialized nation where workers are *not* guaranteed by law a minimum number of vacation days per year.
Which brings me to another thing Australians do better: vacation. My local cafe here closed the day before Christmas. It reopens on Jan. 15. And no one here thinks that's strange. January here is like August in France. The only labor taking place in summer seems to be tunneling into coconuts to sip from by the pool. In the majority of nations, including all industrialised nations except the United States, advances in employee relations have seen the introduction of statutory agreements for minimum employee leave from work-that is the amount of entitlement to paid vacation and public holidays. Several companies will offer contractually more time, depending on the sector. Companies and the law may also differ as to whether public holidays are counted as part of the minimum leave. Disparities in national minimums are still subject of debate regarding work-life balance and perceived differences between nations. These numbers usually refer to full-time employment, part-time workers may get a reduced number of days. In most countries, public holidays are paid and usually not considered part of the annual leave. Also, in most countries there are additional paid leave benefits such as parental leave and sick leave that are not listed here. AUSTRALIA For each year of service with his or her employer, an employee is entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks of paid annual leave, unless the employee is a shiftworker, in which case he or she is entitled to a minimum of 5 weeks of paid annual leave. Every employee is also entitled to 10 to 13 paid public holidays depending on the state and territory. Long service leave, which varies by jurisdiction, is also available to long standing employees.
