The thing is that most of these Federal programs and grants came into being due to a catalyst event. Trauma going untreated. Deaf people not being understood in emergency rooms and becoming preventable death statistics.

Yes. The markets are completely rigged. All we can really do is look for patterns in how they rig them and then try to front run a developing pattern we recognize. It sometimes pays off and that Eureka! is like discovering fire. The rest of the time your eyes glaze staring at charts.

I do think the dearth of understanding about the jump from opsin-coated photoreceptors to camera-eye is puzzling. I imagine alien designers sometimes, dovetailing with my skepticism that DNA evolved naturally. Then I feel kind of silly and think of something else. 😁

Thanks for the detailed response. I'm not really a proponent of epigenetics being involved in the human eye's evolution other than perhaps some fine tuning tweaks that may have somehow become hardwired, I was playing devil's advocate.

The selfish motivation behind this grift is almost as gut-churning as thinking about great grandmothers having to navigate X's vacuous vitriol to change their Medicare Advantage plan.

This debate is exactly why we lost: overthinking bullshit. Pretty soon you find yourself trying to remember pronouns for dozens of different people when two work for 96.5% of the population. We alienate the many to coddle the few.
Universal inclusion is a nice concept but impractical politically.
