Getting along like Unicode in an ASCII file. In a love/hate (but mostly love) relationship with Alabama, Mobile in particular. I like SQL.

And, of course, EVERYTHING I post here is on my own behalf, speaking only for myself, etc. unless explicitly stated

We had one of our anniversaries last week (we got legally married well before our wedding), and my wife took this picture of me. She really brings out the best in me in pictures.

Looks like the new Office icons have hit my computer. It definitely feels like change for the sake of change, not because they're better than previous ones (they're not).

Take this peace with you on your travels, and stay safe out there.

Guys, I’m not burning my phone. I’m also not Robert. (Not redacting the URL because fuck the grifters.)

My wife and I were commenting on the extreme sexual dimorphism in golden orb weavers, and she made a joke about a door to door salesman from eras past asking to speak to the man of the house. I had to sketch it. I will probably go back and re-do it - I’m not super-good but I can improve it.

I missed this post last week, but here are some beautiful orb weavers I’ve seen recently in Daphne, AL. I thought I had one from a neighbor’s yard here in Mobile, but it seems to be eluding me.

I love our spiders down here.

A haven’t got any memes close to hand, but here’s a heron!

Apropos of nothing, this picture came up in conversation this morning and I felt like sharing it here. It’s the George Washington Bridge as seen from Fort Lee, NJ. I took this in December 2023.

Never did get into NYC on that trip, but at least I SAW Manhattan. Haven’t been since I was 8 or so.

Taking a moment from my usual Opinion Having to gently remind everyone that having an opinion, take, or reaction to everything isn’t mandatory. It’s absolutely ok to respond to everything. Pick your battles. I have a few things I feel very strongly about, and I have to let other things roll off.

Saw on Tumblr thanks to @diane.dianeduane.com, figured it was worth cross-posting here.

I have been getting a LOT of unsolicited GOP fundraising texts today, but this is by far the most... threatening. It reads like a SHAKEDOWN.

… but I’m not IN Mississippi! I’m in Alabama. I’m able to get in fine on my phone, which is on the same network as my computer, so I am a wee bit confused here. This is the first time I’ve had any trouble accessing the site from the computer at home.

Also, these age verification laws are bullshit.

On mail-in voting in AL: I have cleaned out as much of my old Twitter history as possible, but I remain proud of this exchange I had back in 2020 with then-Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill on the topic of mail-in voting. It’s not about security or integrity, it’s all about remaining in power.

I will never get tired of posting this screenshot of an actual exchange I had on Twitter with the then-Secretary of State of Alabama.

If you had told past me that I'd be looking at this specific installer in August 2025, I would not have believed you. Current me kinda can't believe it either, but here we are.

My wife sent me this today, and yeah, a lot of the time this is how it feels to move through the world as a diabetic. I usually do pretty well, but once in a while it's super-difficult.

Monkey has achieved peak cat: he is sitting on a smooth, flat thing which is itself sitting on a smooth, flat thing, which is atop a soft flat thing.

I had most of these the FIRST time they were printed. <feels the winds of time blowing through my bones>

I don’t use this mug often, but I should. My mom and grandma found this and got it for me. It’s so tempting to dismiss it as being cutesy and stereotypical and whatnot, but a) the pseudocode is actually pretty good, and b) come on, it’s from Mom and Grandma.
