American culture lacks cohesion. Comprehensiveness itself can never aspire to a unity both edifying and transformative. Cohesion provides the connecting tissue that is called upon to pull together as a team. The residual is value.

On the surface it teems with victories for plurality, diversity, and comprehensiveness. But the pursuit of individual excellence induces collective anemia. Idols with no ideology. There is no substitute for winning but there are no unifying goals worthy of victory.

They transmogrify into surrogate heroes for the masses as civic leaders, crusaders for justice, captains of industry, and masters of the arts and athletic agility. But there is no team effort. Everyone is out for themselves.

Culture suffers. It suffers from schizophrenia. Individuals thrive in this environment but culture itself undergoes a personality disorder. There is no agenda higher than the four aspirational dreams.

Memory and imagination unite becoming members in the narrative. They are stored as mnemonic patterns of behavior. But with, “The End,” membership expires, and one finds oneself on an island without an exit plan. A fantasy land of untold riches with no unifying mission.

A movie, in the same way as a painting or a novel, is an ideal world looking for kindred spirits. They make heroes of armchair generals, lovers of introverted nerds, and wiseacres of the town idiot.

They may not even provide the backdrop against which the narrative takes place. But they are always there. And when they take you to a place where it seems a bright new chapter of life is being revealed, they numb you like a shot of Novocain to the cerebellum unawares.

These products are highly effective and quite often display artistic quality of the highest caliber. Acting, directing, cinematography, and all the other components of filmmaking are specialized crafts with their body of techniques and expertise.

The culture industry doesn’t disseminate these behavioral patterns in a conscious effort. It is a business that follows the cash. Quality is measured at the box office using the rubric that you drive profits by appealing to the lowest common denominator.
