As the new semester is approaching (at least here in Munich), I thought it might be a good time to reshare my course guidelines on the use of A.I.

Perhaps you find it useful or have some comments on what I'm missing here (this is work in progress of course).

Instead of teaching political economy and R separately, I’ve once again combined them into a single integrated course—this time focusing on the (European) Political Economy of climate change & economic security.

You can find both slides and syllabus here: www.timoseidl.com/teaching/r-a...

Some professional news: Last week I joined the Technical University of Munich as an Assistant Professor of Political Economy (with a focus on technological change).

Can't wait to get to know my new students & colleagues at HfP, and big thanks to everyone who made this possible—you know who you are!

For example, documenting and assessing that projects meet IPCEIs' eligibility & compatibility criteria creates high administrative burdens. This contributes, among other things, to unequal participation among member states & companies, with larger ones participating disproportionately.
February 27, 2025 at 12:29 PM
In the paper, we argue that while the literature has rightly stress that conditionalities are key to a effective and equitable industrial policy, conditionalities also come with costs and are shaped by the specific ideational, institutional and political constraints within which they emerge.
February 27, 2025 at 12:29 PM
IPCEIs are subject to a complex governance architecture by which the Commission's Directorate-General for Competition wants to ensure that projects meet its demanding eligibility & compatibility criteria—which form the heart of the IPCEI conditionality regime (see the figures below).

IPCEIs have recently emerged as a key tool in the EU's fast-growing industrial policy toolbox.

In a new paper in Competition & Change, @luukschmitz.bsky.social, @tobiaswuttke.bsky.social and I take a closer look at how this instrument works on the ground.

A short thread (link to the paper below)👇

Given the spike in activity on here (finally!), it might be a good moment to repost two recent working papers on the governance and history of the 'poster child' of the EU's new industrial policy: the Important Projects of Common European Interest or IPCEIs.

On my way to Bochum where I'll spend the next days discussing the nuts and bolts of industrial policy with a stellar line-up of scholars.

This workshop, co-organized with Salih Bora and @fbulfone.bsky.social, is hosted and generously supported by the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS).

🚨 New working paper with @luukschmitz.bsky.social & Tobias Wuttke.

To better understand how EU industrial policy actually works, we take an in-depth look at the governance of Important Projects of Common European Interest.

Questions and comments welcome!

🚨 For Geopolitics, I reviewed three recent books at the intersection of (geo-)politics and technology, allowing me to reflect on this a bit more systematically myself: Acemoglu & Johnsons's Power and Progress, Bradford's Digital Empires, and @himself.bsky.social and Newman's Underground Empire.

🚨At long last, our paper on 'The Solutionist Ethic and the Spirit of Digital Capitalism' has found a permanent home in Volume 41, Issue 2 of Theory, Culture & Society.

Thanks again to @onachtwey.bsky.social for accompanying me on this formative journey, which started with a term paper back in 2015.

The last two terms I've really started to notice students using generative AI in their assignments—in ways both good and bad.

Since all of us who teach should be thinking about this, I thought I'd share my own guidelines, maybe you find them useful.

Feedback always welcome!

'Denmark leads the way in incentivising low-meat diets'

I think this is another great example of the importance of credible compensation and a collaborative style of policymaking for the ability of societies to make future-oriented changes/investments (see papers below).

On my way to Cambridge for a long-awaited workshop on 'The Democratic Politics of Digital Sovereignty.'

Program looks excellent and I'm genuinely looking forward to this one.

I also hope to publish a working paper of what I'll be presenting in November or so, so stay tuned:)
