Well as an evolutionary biologist and an endomembrane biologist, in different former lives, I’d feel embarrassed making such an argument from hand-wavy first principles. I does stick to my general rule that academic arguments tend to be either strong, or loud.

The default intensity histogram in Fiji has a linear Y-axis, so you can’t easily see the intensity distribution of s fluorescence image. By default I mean the easy to get auto-updating one you get when you open brightness/contrast adjustment.

Had this exact experience with push button tally counters! The ancient bakelite-and-metal ones work forever, but the lighter mostly-plastic ones had so many errors I had to return three or four in a row.
