I don't know if this is the most riveting playoff race in NFL history, but it's something... (and look at that conference record for the 49ers, which definitely help for tiebreakers):

I'm going to mention how much I hate the ESPN.com cluttered up box scores as much as Kerr mentions the Warriors' early grueling schedule.

They get the win, but probably lose Mykel Williams. There's always a toll when you go through MetLife. I guess the practical side is that it wasn't even worse.

Posey the edgy competitor is a side that sometimes is under discussed. Well ... this is him post-presser on Vitello's edginess:

Here's the competition for the NFC's 7th seed currently. 49ers are not an elite team, but they also can definitely beat out this group unless the injuries get much worse.

It's worth it to make the most of a tough season.

Can 49ers Fans deal with this middle ground? No? Oh well.

With news breaking that Tony Vitello will be the next Giants manager, I'm thinking back to Nov 2019, the day Gabe Kapler was announced as manager, when Buster Posey was a notable attendee at the announcement presser and afterwards I asked him:

Would such a strong personality play in this job?

Just looking up Dodgers' rotation and usage in last year's World Series, this is fairly wild:

Nobody they pitched in Game 4 last year (up 3-0, turned into a punt game) has appeared for them this postseason. Only Casparius was even on this year's LCS roster.

49ers had 39 runs and 26 pass attempts last night.

From the predictions last week:

When I was talking with @dylanohernandez.bsky.social we were trying to think of the last time UCLA had a good up-and-coming football coach. This millennium?

I just looked it up and turns out they had one for two games recently (as an interim).

One of my favorite long features was when the LA Times sent me to Florida in Dec '98 to interview Davey Johnson, just hired as Dodgers manager.

Such a smart, open, authority-challenging guy. Three of my favorite things.

The 49ers had better have mentally prepared for less than 17 games of Prime McCaffrey this year.

IF they didn't... that would've been very reckless.

What I wrote yesterday about McCaffrey's status right after the calf issue was announced:

Which is why I'm surprised everyone else was so surprised when I said a few days ago that it's pretty clear Jennings is asking for $20M a year or more.

Shrug emoji.

And since I'm in a retrospective mood, a note to Urban Meyer and those saying there's hard precedent for NCAA penalties carrying to NFL jobs...

I'm sure you were just as adamant about Antonio Pierce getting punished during his Raiders coaching tenure after this. SURE of it!

ESPN arrogance from almost a decade ago is still REALLY arrogant. And I remember.

My general point: 49ers kept so many partially injured guys on the 53 that they're going to need 6-8 practice-squad and/or waiver-wire pickups to go straight to their Week 1 active roster.

That's more fluidity going into a season than I can ever remember for the 49ers or anybody.
