Today, the Batgirls pop up here and there across the Bat-line of books. Cass and Babs are regulars in Birds of Prey, and Cass also has her own book at the moment, though Steph hasn't been seen prominently in a while. The characters remain a fixture, just not a constant one. #NeverASidekick

Eventually Steph and Cass became Batgirls again, and all three Batgirls teamed up in the aptly named series, Batgirls, that captured the joy and camaraderie of the trio, with their mutual love and support at the forefront of the book. #NeverASidekick

Stephanie and Cassandra were benched for years following the reboot, but eventually made their way back into the DC universe. Stephanie returned as Spoiler, her past as Robin and Batgirl erased, while Cass came back as Orphan. #NeverASidekick

The Batgirl of Burnside run that followed ushered in a new era of fun and frivolity for the newly young Barbara, who got up to all of the usual shenanigans young people get up to. #NeverASidekick

With DC's linewide New 52 relaunch in 2011, Barbara returned to the cowl, though writer Gail Simone ensured that the character's history of disability representation wasn't forgotten as Babs dealt with trauma and recovery after a miraculous surgery. #NeverASidekick

And the complete hexology, all together. SIX books! My goodness.

My books have arrived! And they look so pretty. I'm delighted with how they turned out. #NeverASidekick is real and we brought out a couple Batgirls to celebrate!

My girlfriend did a squirrel masterpiece that put me to shame, though.

A Batgirl film was announced in 2017, and Leslie Grace got the role in 2021. The film was shot, then cancelled and shelved by Warner Bros. in a cost-saving measure because they didn't have faith in the project. Every DC movie since has bombed spectacularly. #NeverASidekick

Recent versions of the Bat-gals have been short-lived as well. Ruby Rose and Javicia Leslie starred as versions of Batwoman on The CW, Ella Jay Basco played a new take on Cass Cain in the Birds of Prey movie, and Anna Lore was Steph Brown in Gotham Knights. #NeverASidekick

Alicia Silverstone starred as Barbara Wilson, a new version of Batgirl, in Batman and Robin, and her suit was repurposed for Dina Meyer's Barbara Gordon in the short-lived Bird of Prey TV series, where she played Oracle. #NeverASidekick

Batgirl appeared in a handful of Batman: The Animated series episodes that were a strong showcase for the character, but her biggest role came in The Batman in 2005 when she became the Caped Crusader's first apprentice. #NeverASidekick

Batgirl was a regular in adaptations, but often in a tertiary role. In the New Adventures of Batman cartoon from the 1970s, she was relegated to subplots focused on the interdimensional imp Bat-mite and his infatuation with her. #NeverASidekick

Steph's Batgirl series only ran for two years, and was cancelled when DC rebooted their line in 2011. The final issue showed the future Steph never got to have, a sweet sendoff for a beloved character. #NeverASidekick

DC ultimately undid Steph's death after years of fan outcry, bringing her back as Spoiler before she became the new Batgirl in 2009, with Oracle giving her blessing and even supplying her with a new costume. #NeverASidekick

Steph became Robin in 2004 for a brief stint, but the promotion was all a publicity stunt to up her profile before she was killed off in the War Games event, causing angst for Robin and Batman. #NeverASidekick

Steph became a regular in Robin's solo series. Her biggest plotline tackled teen pregnancy, her own, complete with a sizeable helping of judgment about her choices from her mom, Robin, and herself. #NeverASidekick

It took a long while for Stephanie Brown to become Batgirl. She first debuted in Detective Comics in 1992 as Spoiler, intent on foiling her villainous father, the Riddler ripoff Cluemaster. #NeverASidekick
December 9, 2024 at 6:58 PM
DC backtracked on Cass' villainous turn, returning her to her heroic roots as Black Bat, but she wasn't a major player across the line and was erased from the universe when DC relaunched their universe in 2011. #NeverASidekick

Despite her success, DC cancelled the Batgirl series in 2006 and immediately brought Cassandra back as a villain, infuriating her dedicated fans. I, for one, was irate when this happened. #NeverASidekick
December 5, 2024 at 6:09 PM
The new Batgirl proved to be a hit with readers, and Cass was profiled regularly in Wizard Magazine. Many of these depictions sexualized the character in a way the comics didn't, highlighting how the genre's majority-male fandom saw the character. #NeverASidekick
