Dunite is named for Dun Mountain on South Island, NewZealand. The dunite there is quite weathered and, due the all the iron in the olivine, is a brownish color. To the British settlers, it reminded them of sheep’s dung; hence, Dun.

I collected these samples at the Boron mine’s visitors center, but if you want to see these fine specimens, you can find them in the Tate Museum at the soon to be Adelaide University in Australia.

Was there jut after the first snow of the season this year. They are nice. Also federally administered lands.

Dormant is a really silly term. I don’t know which geologist came up with the term, but it is a very poor because it can give the public that live around it a false sense of security. We should really talk of volcanoes as time since last eruption and likelihood to erupt again.
