New to BSky, thought I'd start with a recent #photo I took while taking a break from field work in #Sequoia #NationalPark.
I’m thankfully on leave so I don’t have to deal with the merger yet.

It is 44 degC (111 degF) today. Everything in my yard looks sad today, but I’m still humming along. I think I’m the only thing out here that doesn’t mind it.

If you thought #crocodiles were scary now, the ones that existed alongside the #dinosaurs were scarier.

Ripple marks in a #sandstone from the Flinders Ranges. These marks indicate an ocean or very large lake. They preserve the water flow direction, in this case from the top down, though the #rocks have been rotated into this orientation by subsequent #tectonics.

If a blue foot and a red foot could have chicks, would they have purple feet?

Gives a whole new meaning to grandparents that tell kids that they’re so cute they “could eat them up.”

Most geologists interpret this as sedimentary because of the layering. It has a very similar color to many limestones and the bubbles can be misinterpreted as flame structures (buoyancy effects in soft sediments).

Of the #rocks I’ve collected, it is one of my favorites. I like to use it to confuse students and professors alike. It is a Quaternary finely laminated rhyolite from southwestern Utah. This top view shows bubbles frozen in the rock.

A few years ago, my plum tree put up a sucker. It was far enough from the parent that I severed the connection to the main tree and let it grow. anow four or five years later, I now get these sweet little cherry plums.

I love studies where a simple children's #game, #math and #science all collide. It is important to note that discoveries often require multi-year studies and are difficult to fund because the path to discovery is often non-linear and difficult to write in a proposal.

I’ve found an area at the park that I can reliably find rainbow lorikeets in the morning, low enough that I can get decent photos.
