Are the airlines actually the good guys here? Or at least, not also the bad guys?
At least two major US airlines are waiving fees for travelers who want to cancel or change their upcoming flights due to tomorrow’s looming cuts to 10% of air traffic at 40 major airports. In a notice to passengers, Delta Air Lines is allowing passengers “to change, cancel or refund their flights, including… basic economy fares, without penalty.” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby announced in a letter to employees last night that “any customer traveling during this period is eligible for a refund if they do not wish to fly – even if their flight isn’t impacted. That includes non-refundable tickets and those customers with basic economy tickets.” Southwest and American Airlines both said they are evaluating the situation as they gather more information.

The race was already contentious before any candidates had filed, as parents and teachers began sounding the alarm about changes to curriculum, specifically removing references to vaccines and climate change. Blasingame led that charge and also supported book bans and having chaplains on school campuses. She said prior to getting elected in 2021 — her third attempt — that she was called by God to promote the Christian nationalist Seven Mountains mission. Back in 2021, Blasingame ran on a conservative slate with Henry and Lucas Scanlon, but those friendships grew sour, and it later became public that she’d secretly recorded conversations with Scanlon’s wife. Blasingame’s close friend Damon “Bam” Lenahan threatened to release the tapes if Bethany Scanlon didn’t take down a Facebook post supporting Henry in the school board race. The Cy-Fair ISD board adopted a policy in September prohibiting board members from recording district administrators, community members or each other without the consent of all involved parties.

Non-essential personnel and families from Naval Base Guantanamo Bay are being evacuated, and right now the track looks like a direct hit on the base. Mission essential and any detainees will presumably hunker down in hurricane shelters (repurposed fallout shelters) until it's clear.

With the US falling apart, what nation is going to help Jamaica? Current forecast is a direct hit by Hurricane Melissa as a Cat 4 or 5. Absolute nightmare scenario for the people there. 30-40 inches of rain is just... unfathomable.

JUDGE: I want language - even if the government doesn't want it - that is something the government can live with operationally. So i'm modifying the TRO. Again, this was not a suggestion. This directly contradicts earlier guidance from the DoD that the shutdown would not impact PCS moves for military families.
Incredibly shortsighted of the Army, given the likelihood of no paycheck next week for these soldiers.
An email from Army MPD halting PCS moves, effective immediately. Further clarification that new PCS moves will not be initiated and soldiers will remain where they are, unless they are currently traveling.

Furthermore, this country has a longstanding and foundational tradition of resistance to government overreach, especially in the form of military intrusion into civil affairs. “That tradition has deep roots in our history and found early expression, for example, in . . . the constitutional provisions for civilian control of the military.” Laird v. Tatum, 408 U.S. 1, 15 (1972); see also James Madison, Address to the Constitutional Convention (1787), reprinted in 1 Records of the Federal Convention of 1787, at 465 (Max Farrand ed., 1911) (“A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defence [against] foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home.”). This historical tradition boils down to a simple proposition: this is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law. Defendants have made a range of arguments that, if accepted, risk blurring the line between civil and military federal power—to the detriment of this nation.

I’ve just heard the second person describe the flood on the Guadalupe River in Texas as a “100-year event.” It isn’t. See video. I was working local news in 1987 when an almost identical flash flood happened — same river, same kind of heavy upstream rain, same tragic results. And I cannot believe that in the 38 years since, the affected counties still haven’t developed a real-time emergency alert system that warns people downstream. It isn’t complicated: heavy rains upstream do cause floods downstream. It can be measured, it can be monitored, and it can save lives. What’s even more disheartening is watching the press conferences. Over and over, officials sit at the table, shake each other’s hands, and congratulate themselves on what a great job they’re doing — when the reality is that better warning systems could have been in place decades ago. This in no way takes away from the incredible, often heartbreaking work done by first responders, search and rescue teams, and recovery crews who are right now wading through water and mud, putting their own safety at risk to help others. I’ve seen that work firsthand, and it truly is unimaginable if you haven’t. Say a prayer tonight for the families who’ve lost loved ones — and also for all the people out there doing the hard work in the field, many of them government employees who don’t get thanked nearly enough. But let’s also ask the hard question: why, after nearly four decades, are we still calling this “unexpected” instead of being ready for what we know can and does happen?

No one could've imagined that a region known for flooding would experience a flash flood! There's no reason to listen to NWS or to have an alert system.

A local nonprofit found out that NOAA cancelled a grant for $75k. Last month, NOAA published a news update on how they were restoring the Chesapeake Bay with this same org (ERP). It's not national news, but the ERP shouldn't have to lose money already spent.

The Elizabeth River Project was recently notified that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Chesapeake Bay-Watershed Education and Training federal grant, a key source of funding for environmental education, has been terminated effective immediately, resulting in the unexpected loss of $75,000. These funds were dedicated to bringing river education to Portsmouth Public School students, supplies for hands-on environmental projects at each school, and teacher training partnerships with Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University.
