I tell my players “inconvenience is adventure.” Components. Arrows. Rations. Water. Encumbrance. We use it all. No one has left yet.

I like the dirty details. Adventures are supposed to be uncomfortable nasty things that make you late for dinner. Screw your hankerchief. We’re going on an adventure

I’m not blaming the rule. I think it’s a nice shield go reign players in when needed. But how can you blame a GM that doesn’t understand the rule, or doesn’t recall it in the moment because they’re herding cats? Not everyone has the same experience learning how to run a game.

I agree, but it’s often the case DM’s don’t have the confidence or experience to make that kind of call at their table, and allow rolls for everything. It’s why there’s a billion “welp, my players nat 20’d [insert weird thing here] and now my game went off the rails. HELP!” stories out there.

I dunno. I feel like you shouldn’t be able to roll a nat 20 and then, regardless of whether you have proficiency in the skill or not, succeed on a DC 20, DC 25, or DC 30 check. There have to be guardrails, or it goes from fantasy to farcical.

If it’s D&D, sometimes I’ll be bold & ask what adventure they’re playing. They’ll often look at me like I just asked what color their underwear was. 🫠
