i have nothing to comment on the rest of this thread, but actually 🤓🤓🤓 emacs is usually used as a graphical application now (though it does have a text mode)

almost related tip for emacs users, you can just use the nix repl inside emacs
(comint-run "nix" '("repl"))
and it just works
this has been quite nice for testing code (e.g. that nix testimonial was made in here)

then you just run "emacsclient -c -a ''" instead of emacs

finally got fed up enough
probably could have just reinstalled and that would have magically solved the problems or something, but i just couldn't bother
having some minor issues with setting up nix to deploy server updates, but i can just boot back into nixos quickly for that

just get the zip and uncompress it, 'steam-run ./cyd' in the directory

I couldn't get docker login with gitlab tokens reliably working for whatever reason, and i was getting tired of manually copying it over
