Those conversations cannot start until people start using it. In big ways and little ways. For work and for play. To understand the edges of its ability, to see those edges move as the technology advances, to guide the culture around AI in response to those advances.

If we don't start talking about what these tools can actually do, and how we can use them to create a more just and equitable society, we will have once again allowed the culture and use of a technology to be defined by those who will benefit from its ability to strip away the humanity of others.

I hope you'll read the piece, but if you'd like the punch line, its this: trying to completely reject an AI future is as privileged a position as blindly running towards it. Denying the reality of people whose lives are already inextricably entwined with AI makes us complicit with oppression.

This is probably the most anxiety I've ever felt hitting publish on a thing. I've kept my love of AI somewhat hidden in the shadows because of how fervently its rejected in a lot of the leftist circles I swim in. But the more I used it, the more conversations I realized just weren't happening.
