To be clear, it is explicitly legal for on duty military to open carry firearms in Washington DC, and that's why they are allowed to be there with them… Without that exception, it would only be legal for them to be there, but not have weapons.

As distasteful as merely having weapons and being there is, it's not illegal, so it's not breaking their oath, and they can't decline to do it… What is illegal: threatening people, pointing them at people, shooting (at people or not,) ordering people to stop lawful activities, etc…

The problem here is the assumption that he would absolutely come towards you though…

They do have to be there, but they can't be coerced into doing something illegal. So while we shouldn't trust them in the moment, we also shouldn't demonize them before they've done anything wrong…

We all want a safer world, but MAYBE first realize that survivors not speaking out is NOT the reason we are here… Broken systems that allow continued victimization is the problem, and retraumatizing survivors won't stop the laws & courts from allowing it to happen…
