Wow, I haven't heard of those places in years. I don't think I ever went to them. In '84, I was living on SI, so my friends and I would often drive over the Verrazzano Bridge and go to the White Castle on 92nd St., which was famous for the food-fight scene with Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever". 😄

I lived there in the early '70s. The landlord and his wife lived in the upstairs/front apt. He worked for the NYC sanitation dept. and was a WWII vet. He liked my dad, who was a USAF vet and a city worker too. Back then, I'm pretty sure he didn't financially screen my parents like they do nowadays.

Just checked - an apartment in that very building today is $1,900/month. That's well-within a present-day NYC bus driver's salary.
It's in Brooklyn - not Manhattan - and it's near Coney Island, not right across the East River from Manhattan like the hipster Brooklyn Heights or DUMBO neighborhoods.

Technically Bath Beach, but I generally say Bensonhurst because people know that name.

My dad drove a NYC Transit Authority bus. They didn't share financial info with me or my sister but I'm pretty sure it was a lot of it.

You learned at an early age how to get along with people - your own family as well as neighbors - because everyone lived so close together.

I went to L'Amours a few times. I remember seeing Blue Oyster Cult there (the radio ads would say "Come see 'Soft White Underbelly' - you know who they are! - at L'Amours!") 😂

Back then, it was the RR train. I generally didn't take the N train as I'd still have to transfer to the RR to get to my stop. 😄

Here's the building I lived in as a kid in Brooklyn. It has 4 apartments - we lived in the upstairs/rear one w/ 2BR+1BA. Back then, the landlord didn't allow window AC units, so we had a big fan in the window facing the alley on the right. My kids - who grew up in suburban NJ - think it's a slum. 😄

I was in college and worked as a bar-back in a club in Manhattan on Friday and Saturday nights in '84. Took the R train back to 95th St. in Brooklyn at 4:30am. Everyone riding at that time (mostly transit workers and restaurant workers) rode together in the same car (the one with the conductor). 😄

That commercial played in NYC too. I was a kid in Brooklyn and, of course, any kid we knew named "Anthony" was goofed on about that commercial.

Ahh - you just reminded me: Tom once mentioned that he'd recently learned that the woman that "Sundown" was written about was Cathy Smith, who years later was doing speedballs with John Belushi the night he died.

Your brother appears to have lived an interesting and productive life. He should have had more time to enjoy it. My condolences to you and your family.
