Defense Lawyer
A lawyer at our firm unexpectedly quit and a judge was unhappy so he show-caused me (who had never even stepped foot in his courtroom) to come explain who would be taking over those cases. I hadn't done anything wrong but it was still one of the more nerve-wracking experiences of my career.
For the nonlawyers, let me tell a story. There's a certain kind of court in NY that issues show cause orders for normal stuff. Don't ask why. I didn't know that. A Show Cause appeared in my inbox when I was a new lawyer. I panicked and fell out of my chair, sure I was about to lose my law license.
NEW: Judge Boasberg issues a show-cause order (precedes contempt sanctions) on why he shouldn't find that the gov't defied his orders.

I specifically remember being told that opposing hate speech laws was the same as supporting hate speech and that “what will happen when the other guy gets ahold of this” was reactionary nonsense.

Huh.

All the crazy ways the 5th Cir grants QI and they deny it on this one, which actually seems like a legit QI case to me! I found the dissent far more persuasive, and that's saying something. It's a mess.

The worldview they operate in is one where everyone is a conman and everything is con. They don't trust you because they assume you are also trying to get one over on them. They lie, lie and lie about completely insignificant things. I stopped taking these cases years ago because it's not worth it
Also, let me just say that the absolutely most terrifying people I’ve encountered in my criminal law career are not murders or rapists or even child molesters, but the career con artists, who are extraordinarily articulate and charming and also terrifyingly dead behind the eyes.
In general I've come to really distrust claims that someone can't be a murderer because they're so articulate and charming and literate.

Listening to Rubber Soul and Revolver lately and hearing songs more as John and Paul talking to each other rather than about love interests, in particular "You Won't See Me" "I'm Looking Through You" and "And Your Bird Can Sing."

When George isn't in Congress, all the other representatives should be asking, "where's George?"
RIP to George Santos, the Poochie of cartoonishly inept corrupt comic villains of Congress; so off the chain that even Congressional Republicans were like "look I had the January 6 buffalo horns guy to my Thanksgiving dinner but buddy you? you gotta go."
