12/12/1988: The Oscar-winning movie starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man, premieres. It was filmed at many Cincinnati area locations such as the Roebling Bridge, The Dixie Terminal Building, CVG, Vernon Manor and, of course, Pompilio’s, where the famous toothpick counting scene occurred.

12/10/1913: Tap dancer and actor, Hal Le Roy is born. His distinctive and quirky dance style led him to Broadway and his success there quickly led him to movie roles. He went on to make many film and TV appearances despite the fact that he was a much better dancer than an actor.

12/8/2015: Country and Rockabilly star Mary Joan Okum, better known as Bonnie Lou, dies at 91. She had several country hits and was featured on WLWT’s 50-50 Club, Midwestern Hayride, and The Paul Dixon Show. She passed up the chance to sign with RCA Victor because she wanted to stay in Cincinnati.

12/3/1881: Music publisher and composer Henry Fillmore is born. He studied trombone and composition at CCM before working at his father’s publishing house for religious music. After his father’s death he became president of the company. He wrote over 250 pieces and is best known for his marches.

11/30/1972: Neil McElroy dies. He was Secretary of Defense under Eisenhower and president of P&G, where he pioneered the idea of brand management. McElroy helped establish what is known today as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. DARPA has developed many world-changing inventions.

11/29/2020: The Simpsons’ episode "The Road to Cincinnati" premieres. In it Superintendent Chalmers and Principal Skinner visit the Queen City. It was nice to see so many landmarks on the show, however we all know chili is served on plates and not in bowls. #cincinnatihistory

11/20/1951 Comics pioneer Carol Tyler is born. She is an eleven-time Eisner Award-nominated cartoonist known for her autobiographical comics. She taught comics and art at DAAP.  #cincinnatihistory

11/18/1988: The film Fresh Horses is released. It stars Andrew McCarthy as a UC student who begins a problematic relationship with a young Kentucky girl played by Molly Ringwald. The movie also features Ben Stiller. The film shows Cincinnati locales such as UC, LeSourdsville Lake, and Kings Island.

11/16/1800: Philanthropist and founding patron of Music Hall Reuben Springer is born. He donated $125K and began one of the nation's first matching grants, challenging citizens to contribute. Whenever the project was in danger, he'd give more to save it. #cincinnatihistory

11/12/34: Notorious criminal Charles Manson is born. The wannabe musician led the Manson family to commit a series of murders in CA. He died in prison in 2017, the state having abolished the death penalty.  #cincinnatihistory

11/11/1926: Mycologist Curtis Gates Lloyd dies. He helped describe over a 1,000 new forms of fungi. With his brothers they founded the Lloyd Library and Museum. Lloyd established a trust for the library to ensure its collections and resources would be preserved long after he was gone. #otd

11/9/1843: Despite the rain, John Quincy Adams speaks to an enthusiastic crowd at the dedication of the Cincinnati Observatory in Mt. Ida--later renamed Mt. Adams in his honor. As the first public observatory on the continent, it's considered the birthplace of American astronomy.

11/7/1883: Socialite and artists’ muse Sara Murphy is born. In the 20s, she and her husband, Gerald, moved to the French Riveria and befriended many famous artists, including Picasso, who used her as a model. The Murphys partly inspired the couple in Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night.

11/5/1911: Roy Rogers, "King of Cowboys," is born. The hugely popular singing cowboy starred in films and television, often alongside his wife, Dale Evans, and his horse, Trigger. He's the only person to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame twice. #cincinnatihistory

11/3/1835: Charles Louis Fleischmann is born. He and his brother founded the Fleischmann Company, America's first commercial producer of yeast, which made today’s mass production of bread possible. His mausoleum in Spring Grove is based on the Parthenon. #cincinnatihistory

10/25/1975: Evel Knievel performs the greatest stunt of his career, jumping his motorcycle 133 feet over 14 Greyhound buses at @kingsislandpr . A huge crowd attended the event, and the broadcast earned “ABC’s Wide World of Sports" its highest ratings.” #kingsisland #cincinnatihistory

10/23/1956: World champion archer Darrell Pace is born. He won the men's individual archery gold medal at the 1976 and 1984 Olympics. The odds were in his favor to win at the 1980 Moscow Olympics but the U.S. boycotted the games. In 2011, World Archery declared Pace "Archer of the Century."

10/20/1990: The Cincinnati Reds beat the Oakland A's in Game 4 of the World Series, sweeping them and becoming the new champions. This was also the last time either team appeared in the World Series to date. Always next year…

10/15/1980: WCPO's news staff becomes the story when gunman James Hoskins enters the studio armed with a semi-automatic rifle. While a hostage, reporter Elaine Green conducted an on-camera interview. After a 90-minutes the news team was released. SWAT later entered to find Hoskins dead by suicide.

10/14/1988: The first Tall Stacks opens to much fanfare. The festival was created as part of Cincinnati’s bicentennial celebration and focused on its riverboat heritage. Over 700,000 people attended the three-day event which showcased 14 river boats and featured music, cruises and races.

10/11/2020: Wildlife artist John A. Ruthven dies. His illustrations have appeared on postage stamps and Ohio license plates. He also created the original Play-Doh Boy for the company's logo. The mural of "Martha, the Last Passenger Pigeon" is a city gem. #cincinnatihistory

10/8/1949: The first Skyline Chili opens. The restaurant was started by Nicholas Lambrinides, a former chef at Empress Chili, and his three sons. Located on Glenway Ave in Price Hill, Lambrinides named it for the parlor's spectacular view of the city. Today there are over 130 locations.

10/06/1871 – The Tyler Davidson Fountain, "The Genius of Water," is unveiled before a crowd of twenty thousand. The fountain was commissioned by Henry Probasco as a tribute to his late brother-in-law and business partner and as gift “To the people of Cincinnati.” #cincinnatihistory

10/5/1921: The Newport, Kentucky Steel Strike begins when Andrews Steel Co. imposes wage reductions without negotiations. The response was severe, and the National Guard was finally called in to stamp out the protests. The strike unofficially ended when troops were withdrawn in April 1922. #otd
