False dichotomies are the Devil's duct tape; equivocation is his WD-40.

Haven't verified this.

But assuming it's true, how in tarnation have I not learned of this yet? 🤦‍♂️
You can specify relative position in ggplot with I(x) I(y).

E.g. annotate("text", x = I(.5), y = I(.5), label = "hello!") will place the text in the middle of the plot.
This, combined with alignment arguments is like 87% of the magic for me.

wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

"The most important thing, she said, was that Veritas focused on restoring her health, whereas IVF felt like bullying her body into submission."

One of the best stories I've read all year.

Mothers, be they current, expectant, or potential, are superheroes.

A thousand miles from New York City, the place I call home, there’s a clinic that vows to help women with ‘unexplained infertility.’ I traveled there last year, in my quest to become a mother.

This sounds like the stuff Stephen Wolfram has been carrying on about. Gonna go back and look up if he referenced Turing in his work.
Between his code-breaking work during World War II and his death in 1954, Alan Turing proposed a mechanism for pattern formation that has been identified in the arrangement of bacteria, stripes on seashells and even the distribution of human settlements.
Turing Patterns Turn Up in a Tiny Crystal | Quanta Magazine
The mechanism behind leopard spots and zebra stripes also appears to explain the patterned growth of a bismuth crystal, extending Alan Turing’s 1952 idea to the atomic scale.

I really don't think that the banning of VP JD Vance is the win the accounts here think it is.

I mean, it's a win for a certain definition of "win", but it's not what most people think of as a "win".

We should probably cue Inego Montoya's famous discourse at this point...

These are real images of exoplanets.

Four super-Jupiters, imaged 10 times over 12 years around a star 133 lightyears away.

These are real, giant worlds, out there in the dark.

And we can see them.

Holy crap.

TIL the word "peacock" can also be a verb.

There are previous eras of my life where I could have used it this way several times a day.

This whole autism dustup is surreal.

As dad of an ASD child myself, one of the first things we learn was the maxim "If you see 10 people on the spectrum, you've seen 10 people on the spectrum"

Seems like many folks, including those with ASD children, don't get this. Very puzzling.

This will probably be one of those points that everybody agrees with, but no one is willing to say:

LinkedIn is becoming absolutely insufferable.

There, I said it.

OH over on The Letter That Must Not Be Named:

"Another effect of the US media's professional malpractice about Biden's dementia is that if Trump starts showing signs of cognitive decline and they report it, people will think it is political and will not take them seriously."

The more I learn about group theory, the more sure I become that God exists.

The more I learn about number theory, the more sure I become that the Devil exists.

Four times in my life I have come across someone saying “Don’t Google it.”

Three times I did.

I still regret two of those times.

Someone said it again today.

I won’t do it.

Just watched the White House dumpster fire à trois.

It hit me, this could be 21st century's Rodney King video. Ugly no matter how you slice it. But totally different takes watching just end, vs watching whole thing.

Most takes seem to be the first -- or doubling down on the take that would provide

Wait. Bear with me here.

Has anyone tried to compose ChatGPT’s Gödel query? Grok? Others?

(I guess would need to know algorithm inner workings -- which no one does)

...or are these statements just “Describe the dangers of trans procedures”, etc.? </snark>

Interesting dichotomy forming around undermining USAID.

Side 1: They do BS. Raze them.
Side 2: They do Good Works. Keep them.

Side 1: If we can get rid of BS, we can let them do Good Works.
Side 2: ….

They refuse to give up BS, even if it means losing Good Works. 🤔
