In the last 20 years, global poultry farming nearly doubled, from around 17 billion chickens and other poultry birds in 2002 to 28 billion in 2022, a steady increase of about half a billion chickens and other poultry birds per year (FAO 2023).

In Rouzic, France, 1 year post HPAI outbreak, the breeding gannet population 🔻 by 38 %, 22.3% of surviving breeders were had black eyes. black eyes birds not associated with differences in foraging behaviour + habitat use

Observations of Black Vultures cannibalising other Black Vultures, particularly at sites wherein mass mortalities occurred. Could be an important transmission route for HPAI.

breeding success of Northern Gannets with black eyes (an indicator of past exposure to HPAIV) was similar to those with normal blue eyes in the year following a severe disease outbreak. Overall breeding sucess lower 1 year after mass mortality.

HPAI surveillance on Fildes Pen, S. Shetlands during China’s 41st Antarctic research expedition. Gull and skua carcasses positive, as well as some mammalian samples. Genomes had an interesting deletion in the NA.

Toename in het aantal wilde vogels die doodgevonden worden met hoog-pathogene vogelgriep in Nederland. Belangrijk om dode wilde vogels te melden om een goede indruk te kunnen krijgen wat de impact is van deze ziekte op wilde vogelpopulaties: dwhc.nl/meldingsform... of sovon.nl/tellen/telpr...
Dezemaand zijn er 122 dode wilde vogels door het DWHC naar het WBVR gestuurd om te testen op vogelgriep. Er zijn nog vogels in onderzoek. Tot nu toe zijn er 57 positieve testresultaten onder dode wilde vogels gevonden: 53 eendachtigen en 4 roofvogels. Its taken a while, but a summary of our "enhanced surveillance" for HPAI that we undertook last spring is now on bioRxiv. Lots of cool LPAI viruses in arriving shorebirds, but no HPAI.

Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs Preliminary Outbreak Assessment #2 High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in Great Britain & Europe 28 October 2025 Disease report In our previous outbreak assessment on 8 October 2025 (High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in Great Britain & Europe). we noted that, although positive reports of HPAI H5 in Great Britain were falling after the summer, there was an increasing infection pressure from Europe with the anticipated arrival of migratory waterbirds. Since our previous outbreak assessment on 8 October 2025 (High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in Great Britain and Europe) there have been 9 reports of HPAI H5 clade 2.3.4.4b in domestic poultry in Great Britain (8 in England and 1 in Wales). All 9 reports have been confirmed as HPAI H5N1. Since our previous assessment on 8 October 2025, there have also been 54 more cases of HPAI H5 clade 2.3.4.4b events involving “found-dead” wild birds (number based on laboratory testing date) in Great Britain. The total since the start of the HPAI season on 1 October 2025 is now 62. Of these 62, 60 have been confirmed as HPAI H5N1, 1 as HPAI H5N5 (see our previous assessment) and 1 as HPAI H5Nx (see Map 1 for wild bird cases). The number of wild bird cases (based on laboratory testing date) after falling week on week in September, has increased markedly since the beginning of October increasing over 3-fold in the last week of October. It is notable that most of the cases in found dead wild birds in October are resident wildfowl (Canada geese, greylag geese, mute swans and mallards) mostly inland with just one case in gulls which accounted for half of the wild bird cases over the summer. The wild bird risk level across Great Britain has therefore been elevated to VERY HIGH, noting that there are still more wild migratory waterbirds to enter Great Britain in the coming weeks from Europe where HPAI reports have also increased exponentially in the last few weeks.
