Correct. But they've built in a profit layer even for Medicare and Medicaid by allowing private companies to make a profit. When I was younger most community hospitals for community owned nonprofits. But no one wants to pay taxes in their states anymore because everything is about cutting taxes.

HMO's were not allowed to make a profit and that is the only thing that changed with 1973. But HMO is largely don't exist anymore. They paid the way for the current profit mess we have.

The 1973 law created HMOs that were nonprofit and almost don't exist anymore. Many hospitals used to be community nonprofit hospitals but people don't wanna pay taxes for state taxes so they went away. It's not true that healthcare companies couldn't make a profit before 1973. Sorry it's false.

They could just do what the US is doing- actively harming healthcare and benefits seniors & disabled or disabled people rely on in hopes those people will just die sooner to protect the wealth & low taxes of billionaires.

America is always had sleazy people with power who wanted to ally with the wrong countries, mostly for personal benefit. I don't know if we are strong enough to stand up to it this time.

The America First Committee (Ludlow, Nye, Lindbergh et al) tried desperately- and fairly successfully for a while- to stop US providing any support to the allies in World War II before Pearl Harbor. They claimed it was isolationism but at least with Lindberg it was definitely siding with the Germans

Totally agree this was exactly the starting point of the GOP long game. I suspect the creation of right-wing propaganda media was part of think tanks too (just a formal collaboration of the existing WASP power structure).

Yes! I think after Nixon, they made a concerted effort to rebrand the GOP & went for the racists upset with Dems over civil rights & the religious right with abortion.

Sorry- last comment: all of the above is driven by the same philosophy that started the country: wealth, ownership and government control belongs only in the hands of white, male, Protestant, wealthy/landowners. All of it is driven by racism and sexism.

And SCOTUS put the nail in the coffin with Citizens United- legalizing corruption, bribery and outright purchase of our government. Now the laws are always shifting in favor of the aristocracy so it feeds on itself. Add that they stopped enforcing antitrust laws so every industry is a corrupt cartel

100%!!! The wealth & income disparity started with cutting higher education funding and trickle down propaganda in the '80s & expanded with tax cuts in '01, '03 & '17 & near elimination of estate/inheritance taxes in '11.
This IS the GOP long game of re-establishing a WASP aristocracy.

Furthering the cause of cartels in every industry- exploiting consumers & employees, driving out small businesses & competition. The US stopped enforcing anti-trust laws in the late '90s and here we are.

This crazily implies Trump wants to improve the economy. Besides the fact that no matter what he will never admit he was wrong about something or ever give Democrats credit for anything, the economy could go into a long recession if it meant he & the top 1% gathered more wealth in the process.
