the drawings (like the one on the right page of the first image) seem to have been added with the third hand, while the ornaments on the title page, headings, and colophon (in the second image) seem to have been added with the second hand, because the colophon appears at the end of that hand’s text.

we know this order because after the central text ends, the marginal hand on the left takes the central position, and the hand on the right continues in the margins around that text.

in this manuscript, they’re a bit redundant, since the scribe already wrote the heading of the next section at the end of each page (in hebrew books the left page comes first), but they’re very helpful for understanding the structure of the quires and how the manuscript was created!

catchwords are used when manuscripts are written across multiple quires (groupings of sheets sewn together). you’d write the first word of the next quire on the last page of the previous one, so you can quickly know the order of the quires (since the quires aren’t always bound immediately)
