Since 1/1/25, 122 million pounds of nitrate-nitrogen has left this watershed as measured in the Iowa River at Wapello. 100 million pounds of that has come since 4/27/25, which is 898,000 lbs/day on average.

Since June 1 in that watershed, they’ve lost about 10 lbs of N per crop acre. Statewide we lose about 25 lbs per crop acre in an average year. That needs to be cut in half approximately for improvement in the Mississippi and Gulf of Mexico

last 5 days (estimating today based on data at noon), the contents of 48 of these (34,311 gal anhydrous ammonia rail car) have traveled thru Cedar Rapids in the Cedar River. That's 6.94 million lbs of N, enuf to contaminate 316 billion gal of water to 10 mg/L, the EPA limit for municipal supply.
