I disagree. It hasn't been since 1707 and one of the Acts of Union. I'm probably pedantic about this a) because Im a historian and b) because I'm from Northern Ireland and I'm too aware of how England and UK are treated as synonyms.

You could argue that England isn't a country. Rather, it's the United Kingdom. England is to the UK as California is to the USA.

To be fair to you, that's probably me carrying baggage of a 30something SLT deciding that the best way to make a point to me was to denigrate 35 years in the classroom.
That said, I've been around long enough to see these fads come, fail and go. That, I suppose, makes me distrustful.
